Dhar is a small, unhurried town in the Malwa region of western Madhya Pradesh, about 60 km from Indore. It was the capital of the Paramara dynasty, whose most famous king, Bhoj, is remembered as a patron of learning, and the town still carries layers of that past: a sandstone fort on a low hill, the 1405 Lat Masjid with its broken iron pillar, and the disputed, protected Bhojshala and Kamal Maula complex.
The historic town was laid out in a rough circle, an unusual plan for the region, though most of the old earthen ramparts have disappeared. What remains is compact. You can see the fort, Lat Masjid and Bhojshala in half a day with a car, and the old lanes reward a slow walk in the morning, when the light is soft and the streets are quiet.
Dhar's greater value to travellers is as a base. Mandu, with its Jahaz Mahal, Hoshang Shah's tomb and plateau views, is about 35 km away. The Bagh Caves, Buddhist rock-cut monasteries of the 5th to 7th centuries, and the village where Bagh block prints are made lie roughly 97 km to the southwest. In the monsoon, the small Sardarpur sanctuary protects grassland where the critically endangered lesser florican breeds.
It is an easy place for parents and older travellers if you plan sensibly. Town sights are short and mostly level, facilities are simple, and the best months are October to March. Use a hired car for day trips, start early, and keep the afternoons for rest.
