The short answer
Jhira Bagh Palace: what visitors should know first
A good base if you want quiet, period character and an easy run to Mandu, and less so if you want slick luxury. Rooms are old-style with high ceilings, services are simple, and the estate is calm. Confirm facilities and room access before booking, especially for older guests.
History and context
The story behind Jhira Bagh Palace
The original palace was built in 1865 by Maharaja Anand Rao Puar III as a guesthouse for English visitors and state guests, and it hosted visitors until 1938. About 1943 the last ruler, Anand Rao Puar IV, redesigned it in art deco and Bauhaus-influenced styles.
After the privy purses were abolished it stood neglected for about fifty years, until the present owners acquired it in 1993 and opened it as a heritage hotel.

Why it matters
Why Jhira Bagh Palace is worth your time
The palace reflects Dhar's later chapters as a Pawar-ruled princely state. It is a quiet counterpoint to the older fort and mosque in town, showing how the rulers lived and received guests in the colonial era.
Today it matters as a rare place to stay near Mandu and Dhar that combines an old property with a working estate, rather than a standard town hotel. It suits travellers who value atmosphere and quiet over polish, and who want an easy start to a day at Mandu.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Think of Jhira Bagh as a base rather than a sightseeing stop. It sits about five kilometres from Dhar on the Mandu road, roughly 35 kilometres from Mandu itself, so you can do Dhar's old town in the morning and Mandu in a day without staying in the busier centre. Arrive in daylight to see the gardens and the art deco rooms before dusk.
The estate covers some 100 acres of garden, farmland and wild land, with stepwells, ponds and a lawn where peacocks and nilgai wander. Rooms are period-style with high ceilings and antique furniture, and the hotel is known for homestyle food from its own farm and dairy. Walk the grounds in the early morning or at dusk; it is the best reason to stay.
Book ahead in the cooler months and ask what is on offer for meals, since services are modest and not every facility may run all year.
Plan with confidence
Before you book the room.
- Book rooms in advance, especially in winter
- Ask for a ground-floor room if you use stairs with difficulty
- Confirm meal arrangements and any non-guest visits directly
- Allow about an hour to reach Mandu from the hotel
- Carry cash and snacks; the estate is outside town
