Plan 01

1 day in Dhar

  1. 01

Day 1: Old town and Mandu views

Start at Dhar Fort in the early morning for the walls and views, then walk or ride to Lat Masjid and Bhojshala and Kamal Maula, checking access arrangements first. Have lunch in town and rest. If energy allows, drive out along the Mandu road in the late afternoon for a short look at the plateau and Jhira Bagh's gardens, and return before dark.

Lat MasjidAbout 30 minutesEasyMorning, outside prayer times

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Dhar Fort: The approach climbs a low hill and the ground inside is uneven in places, with little shade or seating. Older visitors can usually manage the lower areas slowly; avoid the middle of the day, when the sandstone holds heat.

2 days in Dhar

Begin at Dhar Fort in the morning, then visit Lat Masjid and the Bhojshala and Kamal Maula complex. Break for lunch and an afternoon rest. In the evening, walk the old town lanes and the market for sweets and snacks.

    Day 2: Mandu

Leave early with a car for Mandu, about 35 km away. See the Royal Enclave and Jahaz Mahal, Hoshang Shah's tomb and the Jami Masjid, then Roopmati's Pavilion for the views. Return to Dhar or Jhira Bagh by evening.

  2. 02

    Day 2: Mandu

Take a full day at Mandu with a car and driver, prioritising the Jahaz Mahal, Hindola Mahal, Hoshang Shah's tomb and Jami Masjid.

  3. 03

Day 3: Bagh Caves and Bagh print

Leave early for the Bagh Caves, about 97 km away, and visit a block-printing workshop in Bagh village if time allows. In the monsoon, you may swap this for a birding morning at Sardarpur after confirming access with the forest office.

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Bagh Caves: The caves are reached by a climb and uneven steps, with little shade. The drive is long. Suitable for fit older travellers with a vehicle and time, less so for those who struggle with steps.

Guides for the stops on these routes

Pacing

Pacing a Dhar trip for parents and children

  • Do town sights in the morning and keep afternoons for rest; the hill at Dhar Fort is exposed.
  • Hire a car with driver for Mandu and Bagh; distances are large and shade is limited.
  • Check Bhojshala access rules before you go, expect security queues and carry water.
  • Pick the October to March window; summer heat is severe and the monsoon makes roads slippery.
  • Carry basic medicines and snacks; facilities near Mandu, Bagh and Sardarpur are limited.
  • Heat: April and May are very hot, with daily highs near 40 C. Plan outdoor sights for early morning and rest through the afternoon.
