Dhenkanal travel guide

A quiet inland district town with a hill shrine, a sal forest sanctuary and a royal past, an easy two-day break from Bhubaneswar.

Dhenkanal is the headquarters of its district in central Odisha, at about 80 m above sea level and roughly 75-80 km northwest of Bhubaneswar. It is not a famous tourist town, and that is the appeal: it works as a small, unhurried base for a forest hill, a handful of temples and a living royal household, without the queues of the coast.

The main draw lies north-east of town on the Kapilash range, where a Shiva temple sits about 457 m up, reached by a ghat road or roughly 1,350 steps, and the surrounding sal forest is the Kapilasa Wildlife Sanctuary. A small zoo and deer park sit at the foot of the hill. South of town, the Saptasajya hills hold the Raghunath temple and a patch of protected forest, and to the north Joranda is the seat of the Mahima Dharma faith, which does not use idols.

The town itself is modest. The old royal family ruled from 1529, and one of its palaces now takes guests as a heritage stay. Dhenkanal is also known for magji ladoo, a GI-tagged chhena sweet, and for the Gajalaxmi Puja, an eleven-day festival of lit pandals each autumn.

For families and senior travellers, the approach is simple: base yourself in town or at the palace stay, take one outing a day, go early, and use the ghat road instead of the Kapilash steps. October to March is the comfortable season; summer is hot and the monsoon is heavy.

Food to try in Dhenkanal

Food and restaurants · 1 guide

Dhenkanal's food is Odia home cooking: rice with dal, vegetable curries, fish where eaten, and pitha and chhena sweets. The town's own claim is magji ladoo, a ladoo of buffalo-milk chhena, sugar and cardamom that was granted a Geographical Indication tag in January 2024. Buy it fresh from a busy sweet shop and eat within a day or two.

For meals, hotel restaurants and simple eateries near the bus stand and the main road serve plain, filling Odia and North Indian food. Choose freshly cooked dishes, drink bottled or filtered water and keep spice low if travelling with older relatives. During Gajalaxmi Puja the town fills with stalls and the district Palishree Mela.

Shopping in Dhenkanal

Shopping

Shopping is modest. The district is known for handicrafts that include dokra casting, brass and bell metal, horn work, straw and bamboo work, silver filigree and woollen carpets, though they are not concentrated in one town market. During festivals the Palishree Mela is a good place to see local crafts. The best purchase to carry home is a box of magji ladoo from a sweet shop in town. Bargain gently and check quality.

Choose without overthinking

Which Dhenkanal experience is right for your trip?

Most plans get crowded because nobody is willing to choose. These comparisons make the trade-offs clear.

Kapilash steps or ghat road?

The 1,351 steps suit fit walkers and pilgrims who want to climb. The ghat road is better for seniors and families with small children, though it can be restricted on festival days.

Kapilash or Saptasajya, if you have one outing?

Choose Kapilash for the hill temple, forest and zoo. Choose Saptasajya for a shorter, quieter forest and Rama temple visit about 11 km from town.

Festival visit or a quiet day?

Festivals such as Mahashivaratri, the Magha Mela and Ram Navami are vivid but crowded. Ordinary weekdays between October and March are calmer and easier on older travellers.

Stay in Dhenkanal or day-trip from Bhubaneswar?

Staying saves hours of road time and lets you start at sunrise. A day trip works if you are only visiting Kapilash.
