After lunch in town and a rest, drive to Saptasajya, about 11 km south, for the Raghunath temple and a forest walk. End with magji ladoo from a town sweet shop.

Day 1: Kapilash hill and sanctuary
Start at dawn with the drive through Kapilasa Wildlife Sanctuary to the Kapilash temple, by the ghat road or the steps if you are fit. Spend the late morning at the zoo and deer park, then return to town for lunch and rest. In the evening visit the Sidha Balarama temple and try magji ladoo.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Kapilasa Wildlife Sanctuary Half a day combined with Kapilash Easy October to March, early morning Kapilash Temple (Chandrasekhar) 2-3 hours including the climb or drive Demanding October to March; early morning Sidha Balarama Temple 30-45 minutes Easy Morning or evening Pace: Kapilash Temple (Chandrasekhar) involves a lot of walking or steps — do it early, and keep the rest of the day light.
With parents at Kapilash Temple (Chandrasekhar): The steps number roughly 1,350 and are a real climb with few rest points. The motorable ghat road removes most of the effort for seniors, though it is steep and crowded on festival days. Expect monkeys near the top and basic facilities.

Visit Saptasajya in the morning for the Raghunath temple and a picnic under the sal trees. After lunch, drive about 24 km north to Joranda to see the seat of Mahima Dharma. Return to town or to a heritage stay for the evening.

Pacing
Pacing a Dhenkanal trip for parents and children
- Take the ghat road to Kapilash instead of the 1,351 steps unless you are confident on stairs.
- Start outings at sunrise; afternoons are hot even in winter.
- Avoid Mahashivaratri at Kapilash, the Magha Mela at Joranda and Ram Navami at Saptasajya if crowds are tiring.
- Carry water, snacks and medicines; facilities on the hills are basic.
- Book a car with driver for the day; roads to the outlying sights are short but have limited transport.
- Ask about ground-floor rooms and lifts when booking heritage stays.
