Why it matters
Why Avatara is worth your time
Vegetarian Indian food is seldom taken seriously in fine dining, where meat usually gets the attention. Avatara, which opened in 2022 as a spin-off from a special menu at Trèsind Studio, set out to prove otherwise, and it won a Michelin star in the 2023 Dubai guide, describing itself as the first and only vegetarian Indian restaurant to hold one.
For Indian visitors, that recognition carries some pride. It is cooking from a tradition you know, presented with the seriousness usually kept for other cuisines. Whether it is worth the cost is a matter of how you feel about tasting menus, but no other restaurant in the city makes this argument so directly.
Highlights
What not to miss
- 01
The tasting menu
Around 16 to 17 small courses take you through India's regional kitchens over one long evening.
- 02
No onion, no garlic
The chef has said both are left out because they overpower other flavours, an unusual choice at this level.
- 03
A Michelin star
It holds one star, and the restaurant bills itself as the first vegetarian Indian restaurant to win one.
Plan your visit
How to experience it
Book well ahead through the restaurant's site and use the booking to raise every dietary question, since a fixed tasting menu leaves little room for changes on the night. Press reports describe around 16 to 17 courses, drawing on regional Indian cooking in small, carefully composed plates.
All sources agree that the restaurant serves no meat, and its chef has said that onion and garlic are left out because they overpower other flavours. That makes it unusually promising for Jain diners, but neither the site nor the press says anything about root vegetables or eggs, so we have not marked it as pure veg or Jain. Ask the question directly, by email or phone, and do not assume.
Allow the whole evening, and arrive rested. This is a taxi trip from most hotels. It is an excellent choice for couples or adult children taking parents out for an anniversary, but less so for young children, who will find a long tasting menu very slow.
Plan with confidence
