Dubai Frame, Dubai: History, highlights and visitor guide

A 150-metre gold-clad picture frame in Zabeel Park with a glass-floored bridge at the top, showing old Dubai on one side and new Dubai on the other. It is a shorter, cheaper alternative to the tall towers.

The short answer

Dubai Frame: what visitors should know first

A good second viewpoint, and a better one than the Burj if you want to see old and new Dubai together. Go near sunset, allow about an hour, and skip the glass floor if heights trouble anyone in the family.

History and context

The story behind Dubai Frame

Construction started in 2013 and the Frame opened on 1 January 2018. Fernando Donis won the 2009 design competition; Dubai Municipality had Hyder Consulting, part of Arcadis, deliver the final design. Donis sued in a US federal court in 2016, and the case reached no reported conclusion.

Why it matters

Why Dubai Frame is worth your time

Dubai's skyline has several tall viewing platforms, but only this one is designed around a comparison. Its whole purpose is to show the two cities that coexist here, and it does so more honestly than most civic monuments, since the low-rise neighbourhoods on the older side are where many Indian workers and traders still live.

The building itself has a less tidy story. The concept came from an international competition won by the architect Fernando Donis, who has disputed the way the final design was built without him. That argument was never clearly resolved, and Dubai Municipality gives its own account. Knowing that adds some texture to what is otherwise a straightforward, family-friendly viewpoint.

Highlights

What not to miss

  1. 01

    The glass-floor bridge

Glass panels in the bridge turn clear beneath you, about 150 metres up. They are easy to walk around.

  2. 02

    Old side, new side

Deira and Karama lie on one side and the Sheikh Zayed Road towers on the other.

  3. 03

    Zabeel Park

The surrounding park gives a green, informal setting, pleasant on a winter evening.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Begin with the short gallery on the lower level, which covers the city's past, then take the lift up 48 floors, about 75 seconds, to the Sky Deck. The bridge has glass panels in its floor that turn cloudy and then clear. Anyone nervous can simply walk around them.

What makes this viewpoint worthwhile is direction. Face one way and you see Deira, Umm Hurair and Karama, low and dense. Turn around and the towers of Sheikh Zayed Road stand in a line. This is the clearest way to understand how the city grew outward.

The return is through a video exhibit on the Dubai of the future, which you can pass quickly if the family is tired. Time the visit so that you see the old side in late light and the towers as they come on. It is close to Karama, which makes an Indian vegetarian dinner there an obvious way to round off the evening.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Ask the taxi for the gate nearest the Frame
  • Go just before sunset for both views in good light
  • Skip the glass panels if heights trouble you
  • Plan dinner in nearby Karama afterwards

FAQs

Is Dubai Frame better than Burj Khalifa?

It is lower and cheaper, but it shows old and new Dubai together. Do Burj Khalifa for height and the Frame for understanding.

No. You can walk around the panels and still get the full views.

How do seniors get up?

By lift, which takes about 75 seconds to reach the Sky Deck.
