Museum of the Future: what visitors should know first

Go if you enjoy immersive exhibits or have children or teenagers. Book a timed slot in advance. If you mainly want to see the striking building, you can do that from outside and spend the money elsewhere.

Why it matters

Why Museum of the Future is worth your time

Dubai wants to be judged on what comes next as much as on what it has already built, and this museum is that ambition in physical form. Opened on 22 February 2022 and designed by Killa Design with Buro Happold, it has quickly become one of the most photographed buildings in the city, in part because it looks like nothing else on Sheikh Zayed Road.

Its value as a museum is more mixed. It is less a collection than a guided, theatrical story about possible futures. Families with teenagers tend to come out talking, while those who want historical depth will do better at Al Shindagha. Knowing which group you belong to is the point of deciding in advance.

Highlights

What not to miss

  1. 01

    OSS Hope

The opening floor simulates a working space station and sets the theatrical tone of the visit.

  2. 02

    The Heal Institute

This floor on ecology and biodiversity has the most visually memorable room in the building.

  3. 03

    The calligraphy skin

Arabic script covers the steel exterior, and it reads best from outside at a distance.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Book a timed slot and be there a little early to clear the entry formalities. The experience starts on the upper floors and works down, so you go up by lift and walk through in sequence. A simulated journey to an orbital space station comes first, followed by a floor on ecology and biodiversity, a wellness space called Al Waha, and a floor on present-day technology.

The lowest level, Future Heroes, is designed for children under ten, so families with young ones should save energy for it. Adults who are not much interested in futurism may prefer the Heal Institute's library of living species, which is the most visually memorable room.

Allow time outside as well. The building's stainless-steel skin is covered in Arabic calligraphy, and it is best photographed from a distance. The road here is wide and hot, so it is simpler to take a taxi to the door than to walk from anywhere nearby.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Book your slot before leaving India
  • Take a taxi to the door rather than walking the road
  • Warn the staff if you need wheelchair help
  • See the exterior properly before or after your slot
