Why it matters

Why Dubai Miracle Garden is worth your time

For a family arriving from an Indian winter, the attraction is the surprise of it: flowers on this scale in a desert. Opened on Valentine's Day in 2013 and covering about 72,000 square metres, the garden is irrigated with recycled wastewater through drip lines. It also holds Guinness World Records, including one for the world's largest vertical garden.

The garden makes no attempt to be natural, and that is part of the honest appeal. It is pure Dubai: a commercial project, built because someone decided it should exist, and enjoyed by huge numbers of families. Treat it as a cheerful outing rather than as a botanical garden, and you will come away pleased.

What not to miss

  1. 01

    The floral structures

Large frames are planted so thickly that the whole shape appears to be made of flowers.

  2. 02

    Dusk and lights

Arriving in late afternoon gives you both daylight colour and the evening lighting.

  3. 03

    The Butterfly Garden

An indoor sanctuary nearby offers shade and a calmer change of pace.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

First confirm that the season is running, as the garden typically opens around October and shuts by about April because of the summer heat. Then pick a late-afternoon arrival, so that you see the displays in daylight and with the lights coming on, and avoid the hottest part of the day.

You walk through themed displays built from flowers on frames, including a licensed Mickey Mouse topiary and a world-record vertical garden, and the fun lies in the sheer scale and oddity of it all. It suits grandparents and small children together. Those who prefer quiet horticulture may find it rather loud.

The site is well inland, so plan on a taxi both ways and fix your return before the evening rush. Water is used heavily here, so it is watered after closing, and you will see the planting at its best in the cooler months. Allow two to three hours, and keep the rest of the day light.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Confirm the current season before you plan the day
  • Go in late afternoon with hats and water
  • Fix your return taxi before the evening rush
  • Ask about wheelchairs or buggies at the gate
