El Nido is a small town on Bacuit Bay at the northern tip of mainland Palawan, in the Philippines. It is the gateway to the Bacuit archipelago, about 45 islands and islets of limestone karst that rise straight out of clear water. Wikipedia places the town about 269 km north-east of Puerto Princesa and about 420 km south-west of Manila, which tells you how far it is from anywhere else.

Most visitors come for the water. Island-hopping boats leave from the town beach each morning for lagoons, small beaches and snorkelling stops, and a day on the bay is the main event. Away from the boats, Nacpan Beach to the north and the quieter beaches on the west side of the bay give you land-based days, and the Taraw Cliff viewpoint shows you the whole bay from above.

El Nido sits within the El Nido-Taytay Managed Resource Protected Area, which Wikipedia describes as the largest marine sanctuary in the Philippines. That is why there are fees, lettered tour routes and rules about where boats may stop. For an Indian family, it also means the trip needs planning more than most beach holidays: flights into Palawan are limited, the road from Puerto Princesa takes several hours, food for vegetarians and Jain diners is not easy to find, and the nearest large hospitals are far away.

This guide treats El Nido as a short, focused trip of three to five days, usually combined with Manila or Cebu. It is better for fit, adventurous travellers and families with older children than for travellers with limited mobility, but with a private boat, a ground-floor room and a flexible plan, grandparents can enjoy it too.

What and where to eat in El Nido.

Food to try in El Nido

Food and restaurants · 20 guides

Food in El Nido is built around fresh fish and seafood, grilled meat, rice and Filipino dishes, with pizza, pasta and cafe food aimed at visitors. Wikivoyage lists places such as Art Cafe on Sirena Street, a few Italian and European-style kitchens and simple Filipino eateries on the main street, but it does not describe vegetarian or Jain menus, and our check found no restaurant we could confirm as fully vegetarian or Jain, though Aubrie's, Taste El Nido and Ver De are listed as fully vegan and Ashoka and New Deli by Kashmir serve Indian food with vegan options.

Wikivoyage mentions an English-style curry house on the highway between Taytay and El Nido that serves chicken, beef and vegan curries. We could not confirm whether it is still open or what its menu now looks like, so do not rely on it without checking. No restaurant here is tagged as pure vegetarian or Jain on this site.

If you are vegetarian or Jain, plan to manage the diet yourself. Ask for steamed rice, vegetable stir-fries, fried or steamed eggs if you eat them, tofu, fruit and salads, and ask whether the sauces and stocks use fish sauce or shrimp paste, which are common in Filipino cooking. Bring dry snacks and ready-to-eat items from home, and tell your hotel or boat operator your needs well before the trip, because the island-hopping lunch is usually grilled fish and meat. Island resorts can sometimes arrange special meals if you ask in writing in advance.

Shopping in El Nido

Shopping

Shopping in El Nido is small-scale. Shops along the main streets sell printed T-shirts, sarongs, beachwear, snorkel gear, sunscreen and simple handicrafts, and Wikivoyage lists El Nido Boutique & Artcafe on Sirena Street as a place for souvenirs and gear. There are few established craft markets, so treat purchases as practical rather than serious shopping.

Buy reef-safe sunscreen, a dry bag and water shoes in town if you forgot them, and compare prices between shops. Do not buy shells, coral or turtle products, which come from a protected marine area and may be illegal to take. Cash is useful because card acceptance varies.

Choose without overthinking

Which El Nido experience is right for your trip?

Most plans get crowded because nobody is willing to choose. These comparisons make the trade-offs clear.

Shared boat or private boat for island hopping?

A shared boat is cheaper and sociable but runs to a fixed clock. A private boat costs more and suits groups of four or more, families with older relatives and anyone who wants a slower pace. Wikivoyage describes private boats as good value for groups.

Big Lagoon or Small Lagoon?

Big Lagoon is open and wide, with limestone walls and room to paddle. Small Lagoon is narrow and quiet, entered through a slim gap. If you can only choose one, pick Big Lagoon, and go early.

Nacpan Beach or Las Cabanas?

Nacpan is long and wide, about 17 km north of town, with a rough last stretch of road. Las Cabanas is closer and easier, with a sunset view and a short walk. Choose Las Cabanas for a quick evening and Nacpan for a full beach day.

Stay in town or at an island resort?

The town is convenient for tours, food and tricycles. Island resorts such as Lagen and Pangulasian are secluded and costly, and depend on boats and resort meals. Choose a resort only if you have confirmed food and mobility arrangements.

Know before you go

El Nido travel tips

  1. 01

    Weather and sea

The wettest months are roughly June to September, and boat tours may be cancelled for weather. Keep a spare day and check with your operator the evening before.

  2. 02

    Cash and ATMs

Wikivoyage reports that the few ATMs in town can run out of cash on weekends and holidays. Withdraw enough cash in Puerto Princesa or Manila and carry pesos for the environmental fee and tips.

  3. 03

    Environmental fee

An environmental and tourism development fee of about 400 pesos, paid in cash and valid for several days, was reported in 2026. It is often not included in online tour prices; check the current amount.

  4. 04

    Getting around

Use tricycles in town and to nearby beaches, agree the fare first, and hire a car or van for Nacpan if you need comfort. The road in the wet season can be muddy.

  5. 05

    Sun and snorkel gear

Bring a hat, long-sleeved cover-up, reef-safe sunscreen, water shoes and a dry bag. Do not touch coral or take shells.

  6. 06

    Dress and alcohol

Beachwear is normal on boats and beaches. In town and at local places, cover up a little more. Alcohol is widely sold, but check local rules on beaches and protected sites.

  7. 07

    Medical access

Do not assume there is a full hospital in El Nido. Wikipedia lists seven hospitals in Puerto Princesa, about 269 km away. Carry medicines for the whole trip and take travel insurance with medical cover.

  8. 08

    Power and connectivity

Power cuts can happen, and Wikivoyage notes that resorts on the islands generate their own electricity. Carry a power bank and a local SIM if you need data.

El Nido with elderly parents: what to know

  • Choose a private boat for island hopping if you can, and ask the crew to help older passengers on and off the boat, which is by stepping into shallow water.
  • Pick a ground-floor room or one with a lift, because many town guesthouses have steep stairs.
