Day 1: Bridge, peak and tea
Start early with a tuk-tuk to the Nine Arch Bridge at Demodara and wait for a train to cross, staying well back from the track. Return to town for breakfast, then walk up Little Adam's Peak in the late morning if energy and weather allow, or skip it and sit at a cafe with a view of the Ella Gap. Have a long lunch and rest. In the afternoon visit the Uva Halpewatte Tea Factory for a tour and a cup of tea, and finish with dinner in town.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Nine Arch Bridge (Demodara) About 1 to 2 hours, mostly waiting for a train Moderate Early morning, before the tour buses and the midday heat; the dry months for firmer paths Little Adam's Peak About 2 to 3 hours for the round trip, including time at the top Moderate Sunrise or late afternoon; dry months for clearer views Ella Gap 30 minutes to a few hours of sitting with a view Easy Early morning, when the valley often fills with cloud; dry months for clarity Uva Halpewatte Tea Factory About 1 to 2 hours Easy Morning, when the line is running Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.
With parents at Nine Arch Bridge (Demodara): The path from the road is short but uneven, and in places steep and slippery after rain, with no handrails. Seating is informal. Walking along the railway line from Ella is not advisable for older travellers because of train movements and the uneven ballast.
With parents at Little Adam's Peak: The first stretch is a paved or gentle path through tea estates, but the final section has steep steps with no handrail in places. Plan for several rests; there is little seating. Older travellers may prefer to stop at the shoulder viewpoint rather than push to the summit.

Day 2: Waterfalls and a temple
Take a car or tuk-tuk to Ravana Falls and, if you are fit, the steep stair to Ravana Cave. Continue to Dowa Raja Maha Viharaya for the unfinished Buddha, dressed modestly. Finish with the tea factory tour and an early dinner.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Ravana Falls (Ravana Ella) 30 to 60 minutes Easy Morning, after rain for volume; avoid midday crowds at weekends Ravana Cave About 45 to 90 minutes Moderate Morning; dry weather Dowa Raja Maha Viharaya About 1 hour Easy Morning; dry weather Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.
With parents at Ravana Cave: A steep stair leads up to the cave, and the cave floor is uneven and dim. There are few places to sit, and the climb is tiring in heat. Older travellers may prefer to see the site from below.

Day 2: Ella Rock or Little Adam's Peak
If you are fit and the weather is clear, start early for Ella Rock with a guide; otherwise do Little Adam's Peak and the Nine Arch Bridge. Spend the afternoon resting.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Ella Rock Roughly 3 to 5 hours, depending on route Demanding Start by 8 am, or earlier for sunrise; dry months Little Adam's Peak About 2 to 3 hours for the round trip, including time at the top Moderate Sunrise or late afternoon; dry months for clearer views Nine Arch Bridge (Demodara) About 1 to 2 hours, mostly waiting for a train Moderate Early morning, before the tour buses and the midday heat; the dry months for firmer paths Pace: Ella Rock involves a lot of walking or steps — do it early, and keep the rest of the day light.
With parents at Ella Rock: This is not a gentle walk. Sri Lanka in Style describes it as moderately challenging, with several steep climbs and an often uneven path. There is no seating, little shade on exposed sections and limited mobile signal. Seniors should skip it unless very fit.

Plan for several rests; there is little seating. Older travellers may prefer to stop at the shoulder viewpoint rather than push to the summit.

Day 3: Falls, temple and tea
Visit Ravana Falls, Dowa Raja Maha Viharaya and the Uva Halpewatte Tea Factory by car or tuk-tuk. Add Diyaluma Falls as a half-day if you have a driver, viewing it from the road.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Ravana Falls (Ravana Ella) 30 to 60 minutes Easy Morning, after rain for volume; avoid midday crowds at weekends Dowa Raja Maha Viharaya About 1 hour Easy Morning; dry weather Uva Halpewatte Tea Factory About 1 to 2 hours Easy Morning, when the line is running Diyaluma Falls 2 to 3 hours as a half-day trip including the drive Moderate Morning, after rain for volume; dry weather for any hike Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.
With parents at Diyaluma Falls: The road-side viewpoint requires little walking and suits most travellers. The trail to the upper pools is steep and uneven, so older travellers should view the falls from the road. Slippery rocks and strong currents make the pools unsafe in wet weather.

Guides for the stops on these routes
Pacing
Pacing a Ella trip for parents and children
- Choose a guesthouse with a car drop-off and few steps. Many Ella lanes are steep and uneven.
- Keep hikes short. Little Adam's Peak is manageable for many, but Ella Rock is demanding and best left to fit walkers.
- Carry insurance that covers medical treatment and evacuation. The nearest larger hospitals are in Bandarawela and Badulla; confirm current facilities.
- Take the scenic train for part of the route only, with a reserved seat, and have a car ready at the station if you are tired.
- Wear shoes with grip. Paths and steps are slippery after rain, which falls often in the hills.
- Carry regular medicines, a printed prescription and enough water. The hill roads are winding, so bring motion-sickness tablets if needed.
