The short answer
Unawatuna Beach: what visitors should know first
Yes, if you want a beach day with a fort trip. Go in the dry season, and swim only if the sea is calm and lifeguards or locals say it is safe.
History and context
The story behind Unawatuna Beach
Unawatuna lies about 5 km southeast of Galle and about 108 km south of Colombo. According to Wikipedia, a Ramayana-based legend links the village's name to a piece of mountain that fell here. The Dutch landed in 1640 and later built houses for officials in the area.
The 2004 tsunami destroyed many beachfront restaurants. Illegal beachfront structures were cleared from December 2011.

Why it matters
Why Unawatuna Beach is worth your time
Unawatuna is the closest beach resort to Galle and the place most visitors pair with the fort. It rebuilt after the 2004 tsunami destroyed many beachfront restaurants and damaged the sand, and illegal structures were later cleared.
It matters here because it gives a second pace to a trip: heritage in the morning, sea in the afternoon. For Indian families it is also easier than remote beaches, with restaurants, shops and clinics near at hand.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Go in the morning, with a tuk-tuk from the fort. The bay is curved and sheltered at the right times of year, with restaurants along the shore. Find a shaded spot, look at the sea before you swim, and keep to the area where local people swim.
Unawatuna is also a base for a short walk or ride to Rumassala and the Japanese Peace Pagoda, which sits on the headland. Combine them in a half day, then return to Galle for a rest.
In the monsoon the sea is rough and many places close or have limited service. The Wikipedia entry notes the endangered purple-faced langur, and turtles still come ashore, so keep a respectful distance from wildlife.
