Why it matters
Why Galle Clock Tower is worth your time
The tower is a small piece of civic history rather than a military one. Residents funded it through public subscriptions, as a memorial to Dr Peter Daniel Anthonisz, a Burgher doctor, and the inscription honours his skill and benevolence in relieving human suffering.
The clock was a gift from Mudaliyar Samson de Abrew Rajapakse. It adds a colonial-era civic touch to a fort that is mostly bastions and church spires.
