Yes, for a rest, a cold drink or a meal. It is shaded, level and well placed near the clock tower. Expect fort prices and a mix of international and local menus.
History and context
The story behind Old Dutch Hospital Shopping Precinct
The Dutch built the two-storey hospital in the 17th century on the site of a Portuguese mint, to care for officers and staff of the Dutch East India Company. After 1796 the British extended it, converted it to barracks in 1850, and later used it for government offices; after independence it served as Galle Town Hall.
Offices moved out in 2003. Conservation work began in 2006 and finished in March 2011. In 2014 it was converted into a shopping and dining precinct, which President Mahinda Rajapaksa opened on 20 September 2014.

Why it matters
Why Old Dutch Hospital Shopping Precinct is worth your time
The Old Dutch Hospital shows how colonial buildings can be given a second life. It was a hospital for the Dutch East India Company, then British barracks and offices, then Galle's town hall, before being restored.
For visitors it is a practical anchor: a shaded, level, safe place to rest between the church, the museums and the clock tower. It also shows the pressure of tourism, as a civic building now serves visitors, so be aware that prices are higher than in Galle town.

How to experience it
Come here after the rampart walk, when you are hot and need a seat. The building has long colonnaded wings, so you can walk the verandah, look at the shops and choose a cafe. Many places have outdoor seating with a view of the courtyard.
Shops sell lace, textiles, tea and gifts. Compare prices with the lanes outside, and ask for fixed prices. For food, expect Sri Lankan and international menus. I could not confirm pure-vegetarian or Jain restaurants here, so ask about ingredients and cooking oil.
In the evening it is lively. Plan your sunset on the rampart first, then come here for a late dinner.
