Inside Galle Fort
Best for: Walkers, heritage lovers and short stays
Good to know: Boutique guesthouses and a few historic hotels sit inside the walls, so sights and cafes are at the door. Rooms are pricier than outside and some old buildings have steps and no lift, so check access and cars to the door if travelling with elders.
- 02
Unawatuna
Best for: Beach time with a fort day trip
Good to know: About 5 km east of the city, with the curved beach, restaurants and a wide range of hotels. Roads are busier along the shore and swimming is sea-state dependent, so plan around the monsoon.
Sights in this area: Japanese Peace Pagoda, Rumassala, Unawatuna Beach
- 03
Galle town outside the walls
Best for: Practical stays near the station and bus stand
Good to know: Convenient for trains and buses, with cheaper rooms and local eateries, but little atmosphere. Walk or take a short tuk-tuk to the fort.
- 04
Koggala and the lake side
Best for: Quieter resort stays away from the busier beaches
Good to know: Further east along the coast, with resorts on the beach and lagoon. A car is needed for sightseeing in Galle.

A luxury hotel in a Dutch-era building in the fort, once the New Oriental Hotel. A place to stay for the setting, with fort sights at the door.

Before you book
What to check when booking for older travellers
- Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
- Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
- Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
- Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
- Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.
