History and context
The story behind Thol Lake Wildlife Sanctuary
Thol Lake was built in 1912 as an irrigation tank by the Gaekwad rulers of Baroda. It was notified as a bird sanctuary in November 1988. Published figures for the water spread are about 699 hectares, though sources give differing numbers for the catchment.
Today the forest and irrigation departments manage it together. It is part of the Gujarat wetlands that host large winter congregations of flamingos and other waterfowl.

Why it matters
Why Thol Lake Wildlife Sanctuary is worth your time
Thol is one of the easiest wetlands to reach from the Gandhinagar–Ahmedabad urban belt, which makes it a useful change from temples and museums. The lake began as an irrigation tank built in 1912 under the Gaekwad regime, and was notified as a sanctuary in 1988. It is now listed among India's Ramsar wetlands of international importance.
Its value is simple: a large sheet of shallow water in semi-arid country is a magnet for waterbirds, and roughly 60 per cent of the recorded species are waterbirds. The sanctuary is jointly managed by the forest and irrigation departments, and farming villages surround it. For visitors, it shows how a human-made tank can become a wildlife refuge, and it is a calm, low-effort introduction to birdwatching for families and older travellers.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Drive from Gandhinagar, a journey of roughly 23 km by road, and aim to reach the lake near opening time. Early light is best for photography, and the birds are most active before the sun climbs. Ask your driver to park near the main bund and walk along it slowly with binoculars or a long lens.
From November to February the lake fills with migratory waterfowl. Published sources record around 150 to 160 species in all, with flamingos, sarus cranes and great white pelicans the stars. Do not expect the birds to come close: the water is wide and shallow, and a good pair of binoculars matters more than camera gear. Local boatmen offer rides across the water; they give a closer look, but keep voices low and ask them not to chase flocks.
Combine Thol with a slow lunch afterwards in Gandhinagar or an afternoon at Indroda Dinosaur and Fossil Park. Bring a hat, water and snacks, as there are few places to buy anything nearby, and be prepared for dust on the approach road.
