Gandhinagar was founded in 1960 as the new capital of Gujarat, after the state was carved out of Bombay State, and named for Mahatma Gandhi. It was laid out on a grid of numbered sectors, with the chief architect H. K. Mewada and his assistant Prakash M. Apte having worked under Le Corbusier's team at Chandigarh. The result is a city of broad avenues, tree-lined sectors and government buildings, very different from the dense old quarters of its neighbour Ahmedabad.
That calm is the point. Gandhinagar is not a city of crowded bazaars or ruined forts. Its sights are spread out, mostly purpose-built and easy to reach by car: Swaminarayan Akshardham, a large pink sandstone temple complex; the Dandi Kutir museum and the Mahatma Mandir convention centre, both tied to Gandhi's memory; and Indroda Dinosaur and Fossil Park on the Sabarmati. A few villages and temples in the district, such as Rupal and Adalaj, add older layers.
For families and older travellers it works well as a slow one-day or two-day stop. Distances are short, pavements are wide, and most major sights are level. Plan around the heat, check opening days (Akshardham and Dandi Kutir are closed on Mondays), and remember that Gujarat is a prohibition state, so treat evenings here as early dinners and quiet walks rather than nightlife. Many visitors base themselves here to be near the airport and combine it with a day or two in Ahmedabad.
