Airport
Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (AMD) in Ahmedabad, about 18 km away; roughly 30–45 minutes by road depending on traffic

Getting around
A hired car or app cab is easiest because sights are spread across sectors; Ahmedabad Metro also has a GIFT City station

How to reach Gandhinagar by air

The nearest airport is Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (AMD) in Ahmedabad, about 18 km from Gandhinagar. Allow about 30–45 minutes by road to central Gandhinagar, traffic dependent.

How to reach Gandhinagar by train

Gandhinagar Capital railway station (GNC) in Sector 14 is the main station, with a hotel built above the tracks. Ahmedabad Junction is a larger railhead about 30 km away, with more services.

How to reach Gandhinagar by road

Gandhinagar is about 30 km from Ahmedabad by road, with frequent state transport and private buses. The city has broad sector roads, and highways link it to Ahmedabad and towards Kalol and Mehsana.

Getting around Gandhinagar

Hire a car with a driver or use app cabs, as sights are spread across sectors and villages. Autos run in the city, and Ahmedabad Metro has a station at GIFT City, but it does not reach most visitor sights.

Easy transfers to and in Gandhinagar

  • Visit Akshardham on a weekday afternoon when queues are shorter; leave phones, cameras and bags in the free cloakroom, and ask for a wheelchair at the entrance if walking the large complex is tiring.
  • Dress modestly for temples: shoulders, chest and knees covered at Akshardham, and sensible dress at Trimandir and Rupal. Shoes come off, so carry socks for hot paving.
  • Use a hired car or app cab for the day. Sights are spread across sectors and the district, and there is little shade on long walks between them.
  • Ask the airline or railway for wheelchair or porter assistance when you book, not on the day.
  • Pre-book the pickup from the airport or station, so nobody has to negotiate with drivers after a long journey.
  • Choose arrivals in daylight where you can, and keep the first afternoon free to rest.
