The short answer
Swaminarayan Akshardham: what visitors should know first
Yes, if you plan it. Go on a Tuesday to Sunday (it is closed on Mondays), arrive mid to late afternoon, leave phones and cameras in the cloakroom, and allow three to four hours including security. Stay for the water show if energy allows.
History and context
The story behind Swaminarayan Akshardham
The foundation stone was laid on 14 December 1979 and the complex was inaugurated in November 1992. It was created by Pramukh Swami Maharaj and designed by Chandrakant Sompura. The temple is built from roughly 6,000 metric tons of pink sandstone from Rajasthan, using no steel or iron, as noted on Wikipedia.
The Sat-Chit-Anand water show was inaugurated on 3 April 2010. In September 2002 the complex was the scene of a terrorist attack; it reopened two weeks later, and security has been strict since, which is why phones, bags and cameras are not allowed in.

Why it matters
Why Swaminarayan Akshardham is worth your time
Swaminarayan Akshardham was created by Pramukh Swami Maharaj of the BAPS sect and designed by the temple architect Chandrakant Sompura. It was inaugurated in 1992 and is built of roughly 6,000 metric tons of pink sandstone from Rajasthan, using no steel or iron, in line with traditional temple-building rules. For many Gujarati families it is both a place of worship and a day out.
For visitors, it matters because it shows how a modern temple complex can combine worship, education and spectacle on a planned scale that suits Gandhinagar's orderly layout. The carving, scale and security are impressive, though the experience is more structured than a village shrine. It is the single sight that most visitors to the capital remember.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Arrive in the mid to late afternoon, when the heat eases and the pink sandstone looks its best. At the gate, leave phones, cameras, bags and any electronics in the free cloakroom, then pass through the security check. Dress covers shoulders, chest and knees; a free sarong is available against a refundable deposit. Allow time at the queue, because security is thorough and crowds are heavier on weekends and holidays.
Inside, start with the main mandir and darshan, then walk the carved sandstone and gardens before the exhibitions. The official page lists five exhibition halls with audio-visual displays and life-sized figures, booked through a ticket window that closes in the late afternoon, so buy tickets before the temple closes. The evening arti, shown by the official page at 10:00 am and 6:30 pm, is a good moment to be inside the temple.
If you stay for the Sat-Chit-Anand water show after sunset, buy a ticket early and keep your seat. It retells the Nachiketa story from the Kathopanishad with water, light and sound. End the day at the Premvati Food Court, a pure vegetarian food court within the complex, rather than hunting for dinner afterwards.
