The short answer

Sagar Island Lighthouse: what visitors should know first

Optional. The lighthouse is a pleasant coastal detour, but visitor access, timings and entry rules were not verified. Ask locally or at the port before travelling, and do not plan your day around it.

History and context

The story behind Sagar Island Lighthouse

The directorate states that the first lighthouse at Sagar was built in 1821 on a wooden tripod nearby. A search snippet from a lighthouse database suggests the present tower dates from 1852, but this was not confirmed on an official page.

Why it matters

Why Sagar Island Lighthouse is worth your time

Lighthouses at the mouths of the Ganges guided ships up the Hooghly towards Kolkata's port. The first one at Sagar was built in 1821 on a wooden tripod, according to the Directorate General of Lighthouses and Lightships.

Visiting shows another side of the island, one of ships, pilots and port business, alongside the pilgrim trail. It also shows the shifting coast, since the shoreline near the lighthouse has been eroding.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Treat the lighthouse as a short coastal outing. It lies on the island's southwestern side at Beguakhali, around 25 km from Kachuberia, with a brick-paved approach of about 3 km from Lighthouse Junction according to the lighthouse directorate.

Hire a car or shared vehicle in advance, since distances on the island are long and public transport thins out. Ask your lodging host whether visitors are currently allowed inside, and be prepared to enjoy only the exterior and the coast.

Combine the visit with a gentle walk by the shore. Remember that erosion is visible near the older lighthouse area, according to Greenpeace as quoted by Outlook Traveller, so keep to firm ground and stay away from crumbling edges.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Confirm whether visitors are allowed before you go
  • Hire a vehicle for the day
  • Carry water, since shops are scarce
  • Keep away from eroding edges
  • Go in winter, not the monsoon
