Bakkhali is a small seaside village on the Bay of Bengal, in the Namkhana block of South 24 Parganas, about 125 km from Kolkata. It sits in the Sundarbans settlements area of the Ganges delta, on land only a few metres above sea level. Its main asset is an 8 km beach of firm sand that runs towards Fraserganj, the neighbouring fishing town. The place was brought to prominence by Sir Andrew Fraser, Lieutenant Governor of Bengal from 1903 to 1908, and part of the town still carries his name.
This is not a resort in the grand sense. The water is brown with river silt, the sea retreats a long way at low tide and the main pleasures are walking, watching small red crabs on the sand and eating fresh fish. Around the beach are modest sights: a crocodile breeding centre, a fishing harbour run by the state, a wind farm and Henry Island, a quiet spot with a mangrove path and a watchtower.
It works best as an overnight or two-night break between November and February. The journey is the main effort, around 3 to 4 hours by road from Kolkata, now helped by the Hatania Doania Bridge at Namkhana, which opened in 2019. Rooms are mostly simple, cards are not widely accepted and food is mainly fish-centred, so this is a trip for relaxing rather than for an itinerary of sights.
For families and older travellers, the flat beach and short distances help, but the road time, the lack of shade and the limited medical facilities are worth planning around. Avoid the monsoon months, when rain is heavy and the sea is rough, and treat boat trips cautiously.
