How to reach Bakkhali by air

The nearest airport is Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport, Kolkata (CCU), roughly 140 to 150 km away. Allow about 4 hours by road, depending on traffic and the route through Diamond Harbour and Kakdwip.

How to reach Bakkhali by train

Namkhana (NMKA) on the Sealdah line is the nearest railhead. Trains run from Sealdah via Lakshmikantapur and Kakdwip and take a few hours, and a road transfer of roughly half an hour to an hour follows to Bakkhali.

How to reach Bakkhali by road

Bakkhali is on NH 12, about 125 km from Kolkata. The road passes Diamond Harbour, Kakdwip and Namkhana, where the Hatania Doania Bridge, opened in 2019, replaced the creek ferry for cars. State and private buses run from Kolkata, but timings change, so check locally.

Getting around Bakkhali

Totos (electric rickshaws) and cycle vans are the main way of getting around town and to Fraserganj and Henry Island. A hired car is easiest for longer circuits, and hotels can arrange one. Walking the beach is easy but shade is scarce.

Easy transfers to and in Bakkhali

  • Plan the road journey from Kolkata with a car and a driver who knows the route, and allow 4 hours each way, breaking the trip if you need to.
  • Carry any medicines you need and a basic first-aid kit; medical facilities are limited, with a small primary health centre at Fraserganj.
  • Carry cash in small notes, since cards are rarely accepted and ATMs may be empty.
  • Ask the airline or railway for wheelchair or porter assistance when you book, not on the day.
  • Pre-book the pickup from the airport or station, so nobody has to negotiate with drivers after a long journey.
  • Choose arrivals in daylight where you can, and keep the first afternoon free to rest.
