Before you go

Bakkhali with elderly parents: what to know

  • Plan the road journey from Kolkata with a car and a driver who knows the route, and allow 4 hours each way, breaking the trip if you need to.
  • Choose a hotel with ground-floor rooms, good lighting and a reliable generator, and ask about the distance to the beach.
  • Walk the flat beach in the early morning or late afternoon; the middle of the day is hot and has little shade.
  • Carry any medicines you need and a basic first-aid kit; medical facilities are limited, with a small primary health centre at Fraserganj.
  • Skip the Jambudwip boat ride unless the sea is calm and you are comfortable in small open boats.
  • Carry cash in small notes, since cards are rarely accepted and ATMs may be empty.

Easiest first

Places in Bakkhali sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (5)

  • Bakkhali Crocodile Breeding Centre (Places to visit · 45 to 90 minutes) — Short, level paths and a small site, but there is limited shade and seating. It is a comfortable stop for most older visitors, although the ground can be damp near the mangroves.
  • Bakkhali Sea Beach (Places to visit · 1 to 3 hours, split between morning and evening) — The sand is flat and firm enough for walking, cycling and even driving on the stretch that is lit at night, so there are no steps to manage. Shade and seating are limited, so older visitors should carry a hat and water and walk in the cooler hours.
  • Bishalakshmi Temple (Places of worship · 20 to 40 minutes) — Reachable on foot or by toto along the beach. The temple is small, with little seating, and the approach is level but sandy in places. Older visitors can view it from the entrance.
  • Fraserganj Fishing Harbour (Places to visit · 1 to 2 hours) — The area is flat but wet, slippery and busy with carts and people. Older visitors can watch from the road or a vehicle if the ground looks difficult, and the smell may be strong in hot weather.
  • Fraserganj Wind Farm (Places to visit · 20 to 30 minutes) — The stop is level and short, mostly viewed from the road. Shade is minimal, and the sun can be strong, so older visitors can enjoy it from the vehicle.

Some walking — plan a break (2)

  • Henry Island (Places to visit · Half a day) — The approach is by road and the island trail is flat, but the mangrove walk includes a narrow bamboo bridge and the watchtower has stairs. Seating is limited. Older visitors can enjoy the beach and the edge of the mangroves without climbing the tower.
  • Jambudwip Boat Trip (Places to visit · About 2 hours for the round trip) — Small, open country boats with no jetty, in which a rough sea can be unsettling. This is not recommended for anyone with limited mobility, balance concerns or fear of water. The beach and harbour are better for older visitors.

Practical tips for Bakkhali

  • Cash. Cards are rarely accepted and ATMs in town can run out of cash. Carry enough in small notes for the whole stay.
  • Tides. The sea recedes far at low tide and the beach changes character. Check tide timings before walks, paddling or boat trips.
  • Heat and shade. The beach has little shade. Walk in the early morning or late afternoon and carry a hat, water and sunscreen.
  • Getting around. Totos and cycle vans are the main local transport. Agree fares before you set off, and arrange a car through your hotel in busy periods.
  • Food. Menus are often not fixed, so order meals ahead. Vegetarian options are limited, particularly on Henry Island.
  • Boat trips. Small country boats can be uncomfortable or unsafe in rough seas. Skip them if the weather is poor or if you are uneasy on water.
  • Monsoon and cyclones. From June to October rain is heavy and cyclones can disrupt travel. Check forecasts before you go and avoid the coast in storm warnings.
  • Mobile coverage. Coverage is generally available but 4G can be patchy. Ask your hotel which network works best.
