How to reach Gangotri by air
Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun (DED) is the nearest airport, about 250–270 km away. Allow most of a day by road to Gangotri, so many travellers break the journey at Uttarkashi or Harsil.
How to reach Gangotri by train
Rishikesh (RKSH), Haridwar (HW) and Dehradun (DDN) are the usual railheads. From any of them it is roughly 240–300 km by mountain road; no railway enters the Bhagirathi valley.
How to reach Gangotri by road
The route runs from Rishikesh or Dehradun via Uttarkashi, then up the Bhagirathi valley through Gangnani, Harsil and Bhaironghati to Gangotri. It is a single mountain road that landslides can close in the monsoon.
Getting around Gangotri
Taxis and shared jeeps run the road; in Gangotri the temple, ghat and most lodges are within walking distance. Beyond the road end, Gaumukh and Tapovan are reached only on foot or by pony and porter.

Easy transfers to and in Gangotri
- The temple area is mostly level near the road, but the ghat has steps and the Surya Kund walk is uneven. Go slowly, carry a stick if you use one, and stop where there is a rail or a bench.
- Do not attempt the Gaumukh walk without a doctor's advice. It is about 18 km each way, and the Uttarakhand forest rules ask for a fitness certificate in some accounts. Ponies and porters exist but the altitude remains.
- Keep medicines, a printed prescription and a plan for descending quickly if anyone feels unwell; the nearest hospitals are at Uttarkashi, a long drive away. Register for the Char Dham yatra through the official Tourist Care portal.
- Travel in daylight and check road status in the monsoon. Landslides can close the Harsil–Gangotri road for days, so keep a buffer day in your plan.
- Ask the airline or railway for wheelchair or porter assistance when you book, not on the day.
- Pre-book the pickup from the airport or station, so nobody has to negotiate with drivers after a long journey.
- Choose arrivals in daylight where you can, and keep the first afternoon free to rest.
