Plan 01

1 day in Gangotri

  1. 01

Day 1: Darshan and the river

Start from Harsil or Uttarkashi early so you arrive in the morning, when the road is clearest and the queue at the temple is shorter. Do darshan first, then walk the ghat and, if a guide or local points it out, the Bhagirath Shila beside the temple. After lunch and a rest at your lodge, walk to the Surya Kund waterfall while you still have energy. Return for the evening aarti at the ghat if you are staying, or head back down while it is still light. Note that a day trip from Uttarkashi is a very long day on the road.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
HarsilHalf a day, or overnightModerateMay–June; September–October for apples
Surya Kund WaterfallAbout 1 hourModerateLate morning, when the sun reaches the gorge

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Harsil: Harsil is gentler than Gangotri because of its lower altitude, with flat riverside walks and village lanes. Some paths are uneven, nights are cold, and facilities are basic, so check heating and lift or step access when booking a stay.

With parents at Surya Kund Waterfall: The walk is short but uneven, with steps and slippery rock near the bridge and viewpoint. There are few benches and the spray makes it cold and wet. Older visitors with good balance can reach the bridge, but others may prefer the ghat and temple instead.

Plan 02

2 days in Gangotri

  1. 01

Day 1: Drive up via Harsil

Leave Uttarkashi after breakfast and stop at Gangnani for the hot spring if you are not rushed. Look in at Harsil and Bhaironghati on the way, reach Gangotri in the afternoon and check in. Rest for the altitude, then walk to the ghat for the evening aarti.

Day 2: Morning darshan and the falls

Go for darshan early. Spend the middle of the day walking gently along the river, visiting Surya Kund waterfall and the submerged Shivling area only if the water is low enough. Eat lightly, rest, and begin the drive back down in the afternoon, ideally stopping the night at Harsil or Uttarkashi rather than driving in the dark.

Plan 03

3 days in Gangotri

  1. 01

    Day 1: Uttarkashi to Harsil

Take the road up slowly, with stops at Gangnani and the Bhaironghati bridge. Stay in Harsil, which sits lower than Gangotri, and walk a little through the apple orchards and along the river to acclimatise.

  3. 03

Day 3: Mukhba or the road down

Return to Harsil and visit Mukhba village, the winter seat of the goddess, then continue down to Uttarkashi. Trekkers with permits and good fitness can instead use days 2–3 for the first stage of the Gaumukh walk, but that needs a different, longer plan and a fitness check.

Pacing

Pacing a Gangotri trip for parents and children

  • Treat altitude seriously. Gangotri is at about 3,100 m, so sleep a night at Harsil or Uttarkashi first, drink water, avoid alcohol and keep the first afternoon free.
  • Pack for cold even in June: thermals, a windproof jacket, woollen cap, gloves and sturdy shoes. Nights are cold and the river keeps the air damp.
  • The temple area is mostly level near the road, but the ghat has steps and the Surya Kund walk is uneven. Go slowly, carry a stick if you use one, and stop where there is a rail or a bench.
  • Do not attempt the Gaumukh walk without a doctor's advice. It is about 18 km each way, and the Uttarakhand forest rules ask for a fitness certificate in some accounts. Ponies and porters exist but the altitude remains.
  • Keep medicines, a printed prescription and a plan for descending quickly if anyone feels unwell; the nearest hospitals are at Uttarkashi, a long drive away. Register for the Char Dham yatra through the official Tourist Care portal.
  • Travel in daylight and check road status in the monsoon. Landslides can close the Harsil–Gangotri road for days, so keep a buffer day in your plan.
