The short answer
Jaldapara National Park: what visitors should know first
Choose Jaldapara over Gorumara only if rhinos are your priority and you are willing to travel further. It is a separate day trip east of the Gorumara area, so confirm drive time and booking rules before you go.
History and context
The story behind Jaldapara National Park
Jaldapara is the state's best-known rhino habitat, so it is the logical complement to Gorumara. Together the two give a fuller picture of the Dooars wildlife, from forest to open grassland.
It also shows how conservation takes years: its upgrade from sanctuary to national park in 2014 followed decades of protection, and rhinos remain its signature animal.

Why it matters
Why Jaldapara National Park is worth your time
Jaldapara was declared a sanctuary in 1941 and became a national park in May 2014. It lies on the banks of the Torsa River at the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas.
It matters to travellers because it widens the choice. If Gorumara gives a compact forest experience, Jaldapara gives open ground and a better chance of long, unhurried rhino sightings, and combining them lets you compare two different kinds of Dooars habitat in a single trip.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Plan Jaldapara as its own day trip. Start early from your Dooars base and confirm road time with your driver, since the distance is not published here. The park covers about 217 square kilometres of grassland and riverine forest on the Torsa River.
The main draw is the Indian one-horned rhinoceros, and the park has the largest population in the state. Elephants, leopards, sambar, chital, barking deer, hog deer, wild boar and gaur also live there. Grassland makes viewing easier than in thick forest.
Book your safari through the forest department or your resort, carry water and snacks, and keep to the guide's route. It is a long day, so rest afterwards.
