Gorumara sits in the Dooars, the belt of forest and tea estates at the foot of the Eastern Himalaya in Jalpaiguri district. Most visitors stay in Lataguri, the settlement at the park's entrance, which has the forest office, the Nature Interpretation Centre and a large number of resorts.

The national park is small, about 80 square kilometres, but it is home to Indian rhinoceros, gaur, elephants and a long list of birds. Nearby Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary adds an elephant forest and a watchtower, while the quiet Murti River village makes a calm base. Further east, Jaldapara National Park offers a larger rhino grassland.

The parks close in the monsoon, from mid-June to mid-September, so the season runs from November to March. Between safaris, tea estates around Chalsa give a level, easy change of pace. Facilities are mostly resort-based, so book early in the winter peak, and plan one outing a day for older travellers.

What and where to eat in Gorumara.

Food to try in Gorumara

Food and restaurants

Meals are mostly taken at resorts, which serve Bengali home-style fish, dal, rice and vegetables, and often Indian and Chinese dishes. Lataguri has small eateries and tea stalls near the market, but specific long-running restaurants are not documented, so rely on your resort's kitchen and your driver's suggestions.

Carry snacks and water on safari days, and take bottled water. Ask resorts about vegetarian options if needed.

Shopping in Gorumara

Shopping

Gorumara is not a shopping destination. Lataguri has a small market for everyday goods, and tea from the surrounding estates is the obvious souvenir, best bought from reputable sellers. Do not buy forest produce or wildlife products. Buy tea in sealed packs with a clear label and date, and ask your resort which sellers are reliable.

Choose without overthinking

Which Gorumara experience is right for your trip?

Most plans get crowded because nobody is willing to choose. These comparisons make the trade-offs clear.

Gorumara or Jaldapara?

Gorumara is compact and close to Lataguri, so it suits a short trip. Jaldapara is larger, with more rhinos, but needs a separate full-day outing.

Gorumara or Chapramari?

Choose Gorumara for rhino and gaur in grassland and Chapramari for elephants and birds in a quiet forest. Most visitors do both from Lataguri.

Stay in Lataguri or Murti?

Lataguri is convenient for passes and busier. Murti is quieter, riverside and near a forest gate, but has fewer services.
