Before you go
Gorumara with elderly parents: what to know
- Go between November and March, when days are comfortable, and dress in layers for cold safari mornings.
- Plan one outing a day and rest after lunch.
- Ask resorts about ground-floor rooms, since many properties are lift-free.
- Choose vehicle viewing over steep watchtower stairs if mobility is limited.
- Carry medicines, water and snacks; the nearest large hospital is in Siliguri or Jalpaiguri.
- Book safari passes and resorts early for the winter peak.

- Chalsa and Dooars Tea Estates (Places to visit · 1 to 3 hours) — Mostly level road drives and short walks through tea rows, with little seating. Wear shoes for uneven ground and carry water.
- Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary (Places to visit · 2 to 4 hours, or half a day with a watchtower stop) — Viewing is mainly from a vehicle or watchtower with limited seating and basic facilities. Tower stairs can be steep, so older visitors may prefer vehicle viewing and a short stop.

Some walking — plan a break (1)
- Gorumara National Park (Places to visit · Half a day for one safari; 2 days with a watchtower round) — Most viewing is from a seated open vehicle on forest tracks, which can be bumpy and dusty, with cold early starts in winter. Watchtowers need stairs and offer few seats. Older visitors should ask about the shortest routes and stick to a single outing a day.
