Why it matters
Why Chavakkad Beach is worth your time
After a day of temples, queues and processions, the beach is a rare open space. It is not a resort or a showpiece; it is a local evening hangout on a long coastline, where local visitors and a few tourists share the sand.
The estuary is the main feature, a point where river and sea mix and where river water meets the sea. Kerala Tourism has described the beach as one of the state's less explored ones, though that description is dated. It is best enjoyed as a break, not a destination in itself, and as a way to see an ordinary Kerala coastal evening.

How to experience it
Travel by taxi or auto from Guruvayur; the beach is a few kilometres away near Chavakkad town. Time your arrival for the last hour of daylight, which is both cooler and better for light.
Walk along the sand to the azhimukham, the mouth where the river meets the sea. The place is known for this estuary, Sit, watch the water and the horizon, and keep your belongings close.
Do not plan to swim. The Arabian Sea along this coast can be rough, especially around the monsoon, and facilities are basic. Combine the beach with Palayur church earlier in the afternoon, then return for dinner in Guruvayur.
