The short answer

Palayur St Thomas Church: what visitors should know first

Worth a short stop for anyone, whatever faith, who wants the other face of Guruvayur's religious life. Open to visitors, quiet, and easy to combine with Chavakkad beach. Treat the founding date as tradition, not documented fact.

History and context

The story behind Palayur St Thomas Church

According to Saint Thomas Christian tradition, St Thomas reached Palayur by sea in 52 AD and established a church. In 1607 the Italian Jesuit Giacomo Fenicio, with permission from church authorities, built a larger church around the old structure. The Thrissur Archdiocese designated it its first archdiocesan pilgrim centre on 16 April 2000, and a relic of St Thomas brought from Ortona is at the main altar.

Why it matters

Why Palayur St Thomas Church is worth your time

Palayur is one of the seven churches that, according to Saint Thomas Christian tradition, St Thomas founded in Malabar in 52 AD. Whether or not you accept the date, the church sits at the root of Kerala's very old Christian community, and it has been a pilgrim centre of the Thrissur Archdiocese since 16 April 2000.

Seeing it so close to Guruvayur shows how Kerala's religions have long lived side by side: a Hindu pilgrimage town and an ancient Christian site within a few kilometres, along with the ruins of a synagogue nearby. For many visitors, this is the part of the trip that changes how they see the region.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Take an auto from Guruvayur, a short ride of about 2 km, and enter the church grounds. The present church was built around an older structure by the Jesuit Giacomo Fenicio in 1607, and inside it is a relic of St Thomas brought from Ortona in Italy.

After the church, walk the grounds. The Bottukulam, the small pond where tradition says St Thomas landed, and the Thaliyakulam, where he is said to have baptised the first converts, are both part of the complex. A small museum and a replica of Chinna Malai, a hill associated with St Thomas, add to the visit. Sit quietly in the church for a few minutes and ask staff if there are any services on.

If you have time, the Jewish Hill, with the ruins of a synagogue, is a short distance away. Round off the visit with a drive to Chavakkad beach.

Plan with confidence

Visit as a guest, not a spectator.

  • Dress modestly and keep quiet inside
  • Avoid the July feast days unless you want the crowds
  • Ask staff before photographing worship
  • Combine with the beach and the Jewish Hill
