Key hubs

Ha Giang airport and railway station

Airport
No commercial airport that we could verify serves Ha Giang. Noi Bai International Airport (HAN), Hanoi, is the usual gateway, with direct flights from several Indian cities (verify current schedules); the road to Ha Giang is about 300 km.
Railway station
No railway reaches Ha Giang, and we did not find a useful train link; travellers go by road from Hanoi, about 6 to 7 hours by bus or car.
Getting around
Private car with driver is the most practical choice for older travellers; hired motorbikes and easy riders are common with backpackers but not advised for seniors. Check permit rules for the border area before you go.

How to reach Ha Giang by train

No railway line serves Ha Giang, and there is no useful train service for this trip. Travellers go by road from Hanoi, either by car, sleeper bus or limousine bus.

How to reach Ha Giang by road

From Hanoi, buses leave from My Dinh, Gia Lam and Giap Bat stations, and limousine or sleeper buses can pick up from Old Quarter hotels. A private car with driver is the most comfortable option and takes about 6 to 7 hours. Ha Giang bus station is about 2 km south of the centre.

Getting around Ha Giang

Around Ha Giang town, taxis and rentals are available. On the loop a private car with driver is the most practical way for older travellers. Motorbikes require a licence and an International Driving Permit, and easy riders are an option, but both involve real risk on mountain roads.

Easy transfers to and in Ha Giang

  • Go by car with an experienced driver rather than on a motorbike; roads are narrow and winding, and trucks have right of way.
  • Allow three to four days for the loop rather than two. Journeys are slow, and fatigue is a larger risk than the sights themselves.
  • Carry motion-sickness tablets, regular medicines and a small first-aid kit; clinics along the route are basic and serious cases go to Hanoi.
  • Choose viewpoints with parking close by, such as the Heaven's Gate lookout and the roadside stops on Ma Pi Leng, and skip steep side trails if knees or breathing are a concern.
  • Ask the airline or railway for wheelchair or porter assistance when you book, not on the day.
  • Pre-book the pickup from the airport or station, so nobody has to negotiate with drivers after a long journey.
  • Choose arrivals in daylight where you can, and keep the first afternoon free to rest.
