Plan 01

1 day in Ha Giang

  1. 01

Day 1: Quan Ba and the first stretch of the loop

Ha Giang is a base, not a day-trip destination. If you have only a day, go by car as far as Quan Ba for the pass called Heaven's Gate and the twin hills known as the Fairy Bosom, have lunch at a roadside restaurant in the district, and return to Ha Giang for the night.

Plan 02

2 days in Ha Giang

  1. 01

Day 1: Ha Giang to Dong Van

Drive north through Quan Ba and Yen Minh with stops at the viewpoints. Reach Dong Van in the afternoon, walk the old quarter at an easy pace and, if you can arrange it, see the Hmong king's palace at Sa Phin.

  2. 02

Day 2: Ma Pi Leng and return

Drive east over the Ma Pi Leng Pass in the morning light and stop at the viewpoints above the Nho Que gorge. Continue to Meo Vac and return to Ha Giang on the long road; this is a tiring day for older travellers.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Ma Pi Leng Pass1 to 2 hours with viewpoint stopsModerateMorning, October to November for clearer air; avoid heavy-rain months

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Ma Pi Leng Pass: The viewpoints can be reached by car, but there is little shelter or seating, edges are exposed and the wind is cold. Older travellers do best staying at the roadside lookouts and skipping the cliff trails and the rock spire photo spot.

Plan 03

3 days in Ha Giang

  1. 01

Day 1: Ha Giang to Dong Van

Drive via Quan Ba and Yen Minh at an unhurried pace, with time at the Heaven's Gate viewpoint. Check in at Dong Van and walk the old quarter before dinner.

  2. 02

Day 2: Lung Cu, Sa Phin and Dong Van

Visit the Hmong king's palace at Sa Phin and the Lung Cu flag tower in the morning, with the climb timed for the cooler part of the day. If it is a Sunday, spend the early morning at the Dong Van market first.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time

Pace: Lung Cu Flag Tower involves a lot of walking or steps — do it early, and keep the rest of the day light.

With parents at Lung Cu Flag Tower: The tower is reached by a long flight of steps to the summit, at about 1,600 m, with few places to sit. Older travellers can enjoy the village, the flag and the views from the foot of the climb and skip the top.

  3. 03

Day 3: Ma Pi Leng, Meo Vac and return

Cross the Ma Pi Leng Pass, take the Nho Que river boat if everyone is comfortable with steps, and return to Ha Giang by car. Rest properly the next day before travelling on.

Guides for the stops on these routes

Pacing

Pacing a Ha Giang trip for parents and children

  • Go by car with an experienced driver rather than on a motorbike; roads are narrow and winding, and trucks have right of way.
  • Allow three to four days for the loop rather than two. Journeys are slow, and fatigue is a larger risk than the sights themselves.
  • Carry motion-sickness tablets, regular medicines and a small first-aid kit; clinics along the route are basic and serious cases go to Hanoi.
  • Buy travel insurance with medical evacuation cover before leaving India, and keep copies of prescriptions in English.
  • Dress in layers: the plateau is cooler than Ha Giang town, nights can be cold, and a waterproof shell is useful in most months.
  • Choose viewpoints with parking close by, such as the Heaven's Gate lookout and the roadside stops on Ma Pi Leng, and skip steep side trails if knees or breathing are a concern.
