Lung Cu Flag Tower: what visitors should know first

Worth it if you are already at Dong Van and everyone can manage steps. The drive is about an hour in the plateau; the climb is optional, and the view is as much about the border landscape as the flag itself.

Why it matters

Why Lung Cu Flag Tower is worth your time

Lung Cu is where Vietnamese visitors come to feel the country's northern edge. The tower stands on the peak of Lung Cu in Tuyen Quang province, and it is commonly described as marking the northernmost point of Vietnam, though the actual borderline lies a few kilometres further north. The big flag is said to represent the country's fifty-four ethnic groups.

For a visitor from India it is a good lesson in how a border landscape can be quiet and agricultural rather than militarised. The area around Lung Cu is a Hmong and Lo Lo farming district, and the peak holds geological interest too: the geopark's oldest fossils, about 540 million years old, were found at Lung Cu. Combined with the climb it makes an honest and memorable half-day.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Start from Dong Van and allow about an hour on the road, which climbs gently past stony fields and villages. At the foot of the peak there is a small commemorative house with displays of local tools and costumes, and a parking area. The summit is reached on foot by steps, and the tower stands about 30 m tall with a very large national flag flying from the top, which in the cooler part of the day looks dramatic against the sky.

Take the climb slowly. The altitude is high enough that shorter breaths and cold wind can catch you out even in October, and the steps are uneven. Pause on the landings, carry water, and check the weather first: low cloud can hide the view completely. From the top you look across the plateau to the Chinese border and the stony fields of the plateau.

If the climb is too much for someone, wait below and enjoy the village instead. A small loop trail leads towards the northernmost point near the tower, but it is not necessary for the main experience. Combine this with the Hmong king's palace at Sa Phin in the same morning if you leave Dong Van early.

Plan with confidence
