Why it matters
Why Nho Que River and Tu San Canyon is worth your time
Tu San is described as the deepest canyon in Vietnam, about 800 m deep and about 1.7 km long, with near-vertical walls. It is a defining geological feature of the geopark and one of its main geosites.
Seeing it from the water is a different experience from viewing it from the road. It also shows how the river has carved the karst plateau over a long time. The river also reminds you that this dry-looking limestone plateau is shaped by water, which is why the gorge, the terraces and the pass road all sit where they do.

How to experience it
The best view is first from above. Stop at the Ma Pi Leng lookouts and note the canyon's scale. To go down, take the narrow winding road from near the pass to the river landing, where small boats carry visitors along the narrow turquoise channel for about an hour.
Wear a life jacket, sit still, and bring a hat and water. Water colour varies with season and rain; after heavy rain the river can run muddy. Kayaks can be rented but are not necessary.
The stairs and landing can be slippery, and the road down is rough. If anyone in your group has mobility problems, the pass views are an adequate substitute.
Plan with confidence
Small decisions that make the visit easier.
- Wear a life jacket
- Check the water colour and conditions
