Before you go
Haflong with elderly parents: what to know
- Hire a car with a driver for every day trip. Public transport is limited, and hill roads tire you quickly.
- Choose a stay with easy vehicle access and ask about stairs, hot water and heating before booking.
- Plan one outing a day and keep afternoons for rest; distances look short on a map but roads are slow.
- Carry medicines, water and snacks, since facilities on the road to Maibang, Panimur and Jatinga are thin.
- Check road and rail status on the day, especially from May to September, when landslides are common.
- Night visits to Jatinga mean cold, fog and poor light, so go with a guide and warm layers.
Easiest first
Places in Haflong sorted by walking effort
Easy on the legs (4)
- Busu Dima harvest festival (Culture and craft · An evening to a day) — Events can be crowded and run late, with standing and uneven ground. Older visitors can attend an afternoon or early evening session and leave before the late dancing. Winter nights in the hills are cold, so bring layers.
- Haflong Lake (Places to visit · 1 to 2 hours) — The lakeside path is mostly level and short, and the town is compact, so a taxi or auto can drop you close. Bridge surfaces and boat jetties can be slippery after rain, so wear shoes with grip and take a steadying arm if balance is a concern.
- Jatinga (Places to visit · Half a day; an evening if you want the night viewing) — Reaching the village is by road and needs no climbing, but night visits mean cold, damp air and poor light. Bring a torch and warm layers, and travel with a driver who knows the road, since foggy hill roads after dark are tiring.
- Lumding-Badarpur hill railway (Places to visit · A few hours to a full day depending on the stretch) — Seats are the main comfort concern: carry cushions, snacks and water, and book the best class you can. Platforms at hill stations can be uneven and the line runs through many tunnels, so keep luggage manageable and allow extra time.
Some walking — plan a break (4)
- Fiangpui Presbyterian Church (Places of worship · 45 to 60 minutes) — The church stands on a hill above the village, so expect a climb in the approach, which a vehicle can reduce. Seating is available inside during services, but ask before sitting in any marked space. The area is quiet and not crowded.
- Haflong Hill and Circuit House viewpoint (Places to visit · 45 to 90 minutes) — The road climbs, so a vehicle is the sensible way up. Once there the walking is light, but there is not much seating, and slopes can be slick when wet. The cooler air makes it easier in winter than the town centre in summer.
- Maibang Stone House and rock-cut temple (Places of worship · Half a day including the drive) — The drive is long, and the approach to the riverbank site may involve uneven ground and some steps, with little shade or seating. Older visitors should go with a driver, carry water, and ask locally how easy the final approach is before committing.
- Panimur Waterfall (Places to visit · Full day including long drives) — The main challenge is the long road journey, not the walking. Access to viewpoints may involve steps and wet rocks. Older visitors should confirm how far the viewing areas are from parking and avoid any river crossings or adventure activities.
Lots of walking or steps — choose carefully (1)
- Borail Wildlife Sanctuary (Places to visit · Full day from Silchar; more if travelling from Haflong) — Forest tracks are steep, wet and uneven, with no verified seating or toilets. This is not an easy outing for older travellers or anyone with limited stamina.

Practical tips for Haflong
- Monsoon and landslides. Heavy monsoon rain brings landslides that can close roads and the hill railway. Check road and rail status on the day, and build slack into your plan from May to September.
- Cool nights. Haflong is cooler than the plains, and winter nights can be cold. Pack layers and a rain jacket, especially for night visits to Jatinga.
- Getting around. Autos and shared cars cover the town. For Jatinga, Maibang and Panimur, hire a car and driver, and agree the route and price in advance.
- Walking. The town sits on slopes and lanes can be steep and slippery in the rain. Wear shoes with grip and carry a stick if balance is a concern.
- Money. Carry enough cash for day trips, as cards and UPI may not work outside hotels. Confirm prices before you travel.
- Respecting communities. Haflong has Dimasa, Biate, Hmar and other communities. Dress modestly at churches and temples, and ask before photographing people.
- Wildlife at Jatinga. Never harm or handle birds at Jatinga, and keep lights low at night. Follow local guidance.
- Local conditions. Some travel guides advise checking local conditions and using a local guide for remote hikes. Ask your host about the current situation before you go.
