Plan 01
1 day in Hanle
- 01
Day 1: A long drive and a short visit
A single day is possible only as a very early start from somewhere nearer, and is not recommended from Leh because the drive alone takes most of a day each way. If you are already on the Pangong or Tso Moriri circuit, spend the late afternoon at Hanle Monastery and the village, then see what the evening sky offers before heading on. Treat this as a taster and not a proper visit.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Hanle Monastery About 1 hour Moderate Morning or late afternoon in clear weather Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.
With parents at Hanle Monastery: The hill is at about 4,500 m and the climb to the gompa is short but steep in places, which tires many people quickly. If a vehicle can take you partway, use it, and rest at the top.
Plan 02
2 days in Hanle
- 01
Day 1: Drive from Leh and settle in
Leave Leh early via Karu, Upshi, Chumathang, Mahe, Nyoma and Loma, carrying cash and fuel. Arrive in the afternoon, rest at your homestay and keep the evening light. After dinner, spend an hour or two under the sky with your host if conditions allow.
- 02
Day 2: Monastery, plain and observatory
Visit Hanle Monastery in the morning, then walk the village at an easy pace. Look for kiang and Tibetan gazelle on the plain, and see the observatory only if you have arranged access in advance. Begin the drive back or continue to Tso Moriri or Pangong.

Plan 03
3 days in Hanle
- 01
Day 1: Arrive and rest
Reach Hanle in the afternoon after the full day's drive from Leh. Settle in, drink plenty of water and sleep early to help with altitude.
- 02
Day 2: Daytime sights and a night session
Visit the monastery in the morning and spend the afternoon on the plain, watching for wildlife and resting. Arrange a stargazing session with local hosts for the evening, ideally around a new moon.
- 03
Day 3: Spare day, then departure
Keep this as a weather and recovery day. If the sky was cloudy, try another night. Otherwise start back towards Leh or onwards to Tso Moriri or Pangong, keeping fuel and daylight in mind.

Guides for the stops on these routes
Pacing
Pacing a Hanle trip for parents and children
- Acclimatise for at least two nights in Leh before heading to Hanle, and consider consulting a doctor about altitude medication.
- Expect a long, rough drive of a full day each way; ask your driver to stop often and carry water and snacks.
- Nights are very cold even in summer, so pack thermals, a down jacket, gloves and a warm cap.
- Carry regular medication, a basic first-aid kit and a portable oxygen option if your doctor advises it, because medical help is far away.
- Keep cash, fuel and offline maps, as there is limited signal, no ATM or petrol pump in the village, according to one travel guide.
- Rest after arrival, avoid alcohol and take short walks only, especially on the monastery hill.
