Before you go
Hanle with elderly parents: what to know
- Acclimatise for at least two nights in Leh before heading to Hanle, and consider consulting a doctor about altitude medication.
- Expect a long, rough drive of a full day each way; ask your driver to stop often and carry water and snacks.
- Nights are very cold even in summer, so pack thermals, a down jacket, gloves and a warm cap.
- Carry regular medication, a basic first-aid kit and a portable oxygen option if your doctor advises it, because medical help is far away.
- Keep cash, fuel and offline maps, as there is limited signal, no ATM or petrol pump in the village, according to one travel guide.
- Rest after arrival, avoid alcohol and take short walks only, especially on the monastery hill.
Easiest first
Places in Hanle sorted by walking effort
Easy on the legs (5)
- Hanle Dark Sky Reserve (Places to visit · At least two nights in the village) — Little walking is needed, since viewing is from a roof, courtyard or open ground beside your stay. The problems are altitude of well over 4,000 m, very cold nights even in summer and long, rough drives to get here.
- Hanle village and plain (Places to visit · Half a day, plus your overnight stay) — The village is flat, but at roughly 4,200 m even short walks feel hard. Facilities are basic, heating is limited and medical help is far away, so bring prescriptions, rest often and avoid arriving without acclimatising in Leh.
- Indian Astronomical Observatory, Hanle (Culture and craft · 1 to 2 hours including the drive up) — You travel by vehicle and walk very little, but the site is about 4,500 m, so breathlessness, headaches and wind chill are likely. Visit only after proper acclimatisation and a rest day.
- Stargazing with Hanle's astro hosts (Culture and craft · 1 to 2 hours after dark) — Viewing is usually near the homestay, with little walking, but you stand or sit in freezing air at over 4,000 m. Wear thermals, bring a seat or ask for one and keep the session short if you feel unwell.
- Wildlife on the Hanle plain (Places to visit · A few hours, or fitted into a day of driving) — Most viewing is from a vehicle on level ground. The challenges are altitude, wind, cold mornings and long, rough drives, so bring layers, water and medication and keep stops short.
Some walking — plan a break (1)
- Hanle Monastery (Places of worship · About 1 hour) — The hill is at about 4,500 m and the climb to the gompa is short but steep in places, which tires many people quickly. If a vehicle can take you partway, use it, and rest at the top.

Practical tips for Hanle
- Altitude. Hanle is at roughly 4,200 m, with the observatory about 4,500 m. Spend at least two nights in Leh first, drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol and sedatives while acclimatising.
- Cold. Nights are very cold even in the warm season. Pack thermals, a down jacket, gloves, a warm cap and a windproof layer, and ask your host about bedding and heating.
- Cash and fuel. Cards and UPI can fail, and one travel guide says there is no petrol pump or ATM in the village. Carry cash and fill up in Leh.
- Permits and fees. Rules have changed and sources disagree. Check the Ladakh environment fee portal and Leh authorities for your nationality, and carry ID and receipts for checkposts.
- The moon. A bright moon washes out the faint stars. Choose days around a new moon and keep a spare night in case of cloud.
- Photography. Do not photograph restricted areas of the observatory or use drones. Ask permission before photographing people or monks, and keep white light low near stargazing spots.
- Road and network. Expect rough sections and patchy signal. Download offline maps, start early and check road status for Chumur or Pangong links before heading out.
- Respect. Treat the monastery and homestays as living communities. Dress modestly, pay fairly and follow host guidance on lights.
