Before you go

Hanumangarh with elderly parents: what to know

  • Visit Bhatner Fort in the early morning; the mound and uneven ground are tiring in midday heat.
  • Hire a car and driver for Kalibangan and Gogamedi, and agree the route and timing in advance.
  • At Kalibangan, start with the museum, which is indoors and easier, before walking the mounds.
  • Avoid Gogamedi on Goga Navami and during the fair; crowds are very heavy.
  • Carry water, a hat and medicines; facilities are minimal at the sites.
  • Winter mornings can be cold and foggy, so pack layers.

Easiest first

Places in Hanumangarh sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (3)

  • Bhadra Kali Ji Temple (Places of worship · 45 minutes) — A temple compound on mostly level ground with a few steps at the shrine. Navaratri brings crowds and queues, so older visitors should choose a normal day.
  • Gogamedi (Places of worship · Full day including the drive) — The shrine is a small complex on largely level ground, but fair days bring dense crowds, queues and heat. Visit on a quiet day with a driver and avoid the fair if you have mobility concerns.
  • Sila Mata Sila Peer Temple (Places of worship · 20–30 minutes) — The shrine is in the town centre on largely level ground, with traffic noise around. Stairs are minimal, but expect a busy street approach.

Some walking — plan a break (2)

  • Bhatner Fort (Places to visit · About 1 hour) — The fort stands on a high mound, so you climb a slope or steps to reach the interior. The ground is uneven, shade is limited and there is little seating, so older visitors should go early and be ready to see only the lower areas.
  • Kalibangan (Places to visit · Half a day including the drive) — The site is open ground with low mounds, uneven paths and almost no shade, so older travellers should go early or in winter. The small museum is easier and indoors.

Practical tips for Hanumangarh

  • Heat. April to September is hot, with May and June above 40°C. Plan outdoor sights for early morning.
  • Cold. December and January mornings can be cold and foggy, so carry a warm layer.
  • Getting around. Autos work in town. For Kalibangan and Gogamedi, hire a car and agree the route, time and price in advance.
  • Walking. The fort mound and Kalibangan's mounds have uneven ground. Wear shoes with grip.
  • Money. Carry cash; card acceptance is limited outside larger shops and hotels.
  • Dress. Dress modestly at Gogamedi and other shrines, and remove footwear at the entrance.
  • Fairs. The Goga fair in Bhadrapada brings huge crowds; check dates and avoid them unless you want the fair.
  • Facilities. Water, shade and toilets are minimal at Kalibangan and the fort, so carry water and snacks.
