Why it matters

Why Sandi Bird Sanctuary is worth your time

Sandi was designated a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance on 26 September 2019, and the Bombay Natural History Society lists it as an Important Bird Area. It is one of the few protected freshwater wetlands in this part of Awadh.

The lake supports both resident and migratory birds and shows how a seasonal wetland can recover with protection. Visiting quietly, without litter or noise, helps keep it that way, and a morning here also shows what a village-edge wetland looks like in the Gangetic plain.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Plan Sandi as a morning outing from Hardoi, leaving at first light so you reach the lake while the air is cool and birds are active. The sanctuary is built around a shallow lake, also known as Dahar Jheel, and viewing is mostly from the banks and roadside. Bring binoculars if you have them, a hat, water and snacks.

Migratory birds begin to arrive in November, and many rest first on the nearby Garra River before moving to the lake. December to February is recommended for the largest numbers. The Siberian white crane has been recorded here in the past, but treat that as history rather than something to expect. Move quietly and keep to existing tracks; do not enter farmland without permission.

The lake level has changed over the years and was once nearly dry before recovering, so ask locally about current conditions before you set off. Combine the outing with the Prahlad Ghat in Hardoi in the afternoon, or return to town for lunch and rest. Allow extra time on the road in winter fog.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Go at sunrise in winter and carry water, snacks and a hat
  • Hire a car with driver
  • Ask the forest office about current access and fees
  • Stay on tracks and avoid farmland without permission
  • Bring binoculars and keep noise low
