The short answer

Tomb of Nawab Diler Khan and Jama Masjid, Shahabad: what visitors should know first

A worthwhile day-trip stop for Mughal-era architecture off the main tourist track. Allow an hour, go in daylight, and confirm access locally, since opening arrangements are not published.

History and context

The story behind Tomb of Nawab Diler Khan and Jama Masjid, Shahabad

Diler Khan, a Pathan officer, founded modern Shahabad in 1677 and took over the territory of the Pande Parwars of Angni Khera. He built a brick palace, the Bari Deorhi, of which two grand gateways remain, together with the mosque and his own tomb.

Shahabad declined as Mughal power weakened and the Nawabs of Awadh took over. By 1799 it was described as in ruins, though in 1824 Bishop Reginald Heber called it a considerable town.

Why it matters

Why Tomb of Nawab Diler Khan and Jama Masjid, Shahabad is worth your time

Nawab Diler Khan founded modern Shahabad in 1677 after being sent to suppress an uprising in Shahjahanpur, and he built the town's mosque, palace and tomb. The monuments are rare surviving examples of Mughal provincial architecture in this part of Awadh.

The town declined in the late eighteenth century as Mughal power faded, and by 1799 it was described as in ruins. That makes the survival of the tomb and mosque more notable, and gives the place a quiet significance for history readers.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Start at the tomb, which Diler Khan built for himself from dressed kankar blocks. Its upper storey has bands of red-stone decoration, a detail also seen in the Taj Mahal complex in Agra, and the mausoleum is a recognised monument. Walk around the exterior and look at the proportions and masonry.

Nearby stands the town's Jama Masjid, also built by Diler Khan from kankar blocks. It is an active mosque, so enter only as a visitor with respect, dress modestly and avoid prayer times. A grand pond, called Narbada, lies near the tomb.

Shahabad itself is a busy small town, so allow time for traffic. Remains of Diler Khan's brick palace, the Bari Deorhi, survive as two grand gateways. Ask a local guide or resident where to find them. Combine the visit with a morning drive from Hardoi and a lunch stop in town. Take water, wear sturdy shoes and photograph the monuments in soft morning light.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.
