The short answer
Hastinapur Wildlife Sanctuary: what visitors should know first
Go only if you enjoy unstructured nature outings and can arrange access with the Meerut forest office first. Expect open floodplain, mixed farmland and few facilities, not a fenced park with fixed safari routes. Winter mornings are best.
History and context
The story behind Hastinapur Wildlife Sanctuary
The sanctuary was established in 1986 and lies along the Ganga on its floodplain at roughly 130-150 m above sea level. A gharial reintroduction programme released 494 animals between 2009 and 2012.
Sources differ on which districts it covers; Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, Bijnor, Hapur, Amroha and Ghaziabad are all listed in different places.

Why it matters
Why Hastinapur Wildlife Sanctuary is worth your time
Hastinapur Wildlife Sanctuary protects one of the last stretches of Ganga floodplain grassland in the upper Gangetic plain, a habitat that has mostly been converted to farmland. Established in 1986, it shelters the swamp deer, which is Uttar Pradesh's state animal, as well as river species such as the Ganges river dolphin.
It also changes how you read the town. The same river that shaped Hastinapur's mounds and its flood legends still sweeps across this plain, and a morning here shows the landscape that surrounded the ancient settlement. It is a modest but meaningful counterpoint to the temple visits.
Highlights
What not to miss
- 01
Swamp deer country
The sanctuary protects habitat for swamp deer, Uttar Pradesh's state animal, along with hog deer, chital and sambar.
- 02
The river
The Ganga here supports Ganges river dolphin, turtles and gharial; winter sun brings crocodilians to the banks.
- 03
Cranes and wetland birds
Sarus and demoiselle cranes, storks, herons and ducks are among the 117 bird species recorded.
Plan your visit
How to experience it
Treat the sanctuary as an area to explore, not a single gate. It covers about 2,073 sq km, of which only about 767 sq km is river, wetland and riparian grassland, and much of the rest is farmland growing sugarcane, rice and wheat. From Hastinapur you reach the edge of the floodplain within a short drive, and the best viewing is along the Ganga, its channels and the low grasslands.
Go early on a winter morning, when mist lifts off the water and birds are active. The Uttar Pradesh eco-tourism board lists swamp deer, hog deer, chital and sambar among the mammals, with Ganges river dolphin, turtles and crocodilians in the river; gharials were released here between 2009 and 2012. Sarus and demoiselle cranes, storks and ducks are among the recorded birds. Sightings are never guaranteed.
Bring binoculars, water and food. Ask the forest office for current advice on where to go, as flooded tracks and cultivated fields change what is accessible. Stay on tracks, keep a respectful distance from animals and avoid driving after dark.
Plan with confidence
Small decisions that make the visit easier.
