Why it matters
Why Govindghat to Ghangaria Trail is worth your time
This trail is the shared gateway to two of Uttarakhand's best-known sights. Pilgrims, trekkers and mules all use it through the season, and it is the practical constraint behind everything else: nothing reaches Ghangaria except on foot or by air.
A planned ropeway from Govindghat to Hemkund Sahib was approved by the Union Cabinet in March 2025, but at the time of checking no construction timeline was reported. Walking it, even for a stretch, also gives you a realistic sense of the effort that the higher climb to the shrine will demand.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
The trail begins at Govindghat, where you cross the Alaknanda by bridge and follow the Lakshman Ganga upstream. Shared taxis cover about 4 km to Pulna, after which the remaining distance is on foot, pony or palanquin. Walk steadily, take short rests and carry water, a poncho and a warm layer.
Ponies and pack mules share the path, so keep to the hillside side when they pass. The route climbs gradually through forest, past streams and waterfalls, with tea stalls and benches along the way. The elevation gain is spread over the distance, so the effort is sustained rather than steep.
If you prefer to skip the walk, the helicopter between Govindghat and Ghangaria takes about five minutes in suitable weather. It does not run in bad weather, and arriving by air means less time to acclimatise, so rest properly on arrival.
Plan with confidence
Small decisions that make the visit easier.
