The short answer

Gurdwara Langar Along the Route: what visitors should know first

Yes: eat langar at least once, sitting with the sangat, and leave a donation if you can. Hours and capacity vary with the season and crowds, so ask on arrival rather than planning around a fixed timetable.

Why it matters

Why Gurdwara Langar Along the Route is worth your time

Langar is central to Sikh practice: a shared meal that treats everyone as equals. On a route where lodges are basic and prices are high, it is also practical, and it feeds thousands of pilgrims every season.

The tradition runs on volunteers and donations, so visitors who eat are expected to join in with respect and, if possible, with a contribution. Eating it, rather than just walking past, is the quickest way to understand how this pilgrimage is organised and why so many people manage it on very little money.

How to experience it

Langar is a free community meal served in a gurdwara kitchen to anyone, regardless of faith. On this route it is available at the gurdwaras along the way, including at Govindghat and Ghangaria, and the trust says langar is also served at the shrine. Remove your shoes, cover your head, wash your hands and sit in the row with others.

Volunteers serve dal, vegetables and rotis, usually vegetarian. Take what you can finish, because wasting food is frowned upon. If you have a medical diet or find floor seating difficult, say so to a volunteer, who will usually find a bench or a simpler plate. A short thanks and a donation on the way out are customary.

Carry your own dry snacks, electrolyte sachets and water for the climb, since langar timing will not match your hike. Check availability at the gurdwara where you plan to eat.
