Binh Tay Market: what visitors should know first

Worth a visit if you are already in Cholon. It is more local and less tourist-oriented than Ben Thanh. Go in the morning and keep an eye on your bag.

History and context

The story behind Binh Tay Market

Construction began in 1928 and finished in 1930, led by the Chinese merchant Guo Yan (Quach Dam). It is the largest and oldest surviving market in Cho Lon, with Chinese architectural features. Since 2015 it has been recognised as an architectural heritage site by the national ministry.

Why it matters

Why Binh Tay Market is worth your time

The market is the heart of Cholon's trading history. It was led by the Chinese merchant Quach Dam, and is regarded as the largest and oldest surviving market in the Cholon area.

Since 2015, Vietnam's Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has recognised it as an architectural heritage site. It gives a more local view of commerce than Ben Thanh. It is also a useful window into Cholon's role as the commercial quarter of the Chinese community, which shaped Saigon's trade, food and festivals for generations, and a fair contrast with the more polished markets in the centre.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Arrive in the morning, when stalls are busiest. The market is built around a central courtyard, with a Chinese-influenced roofline and clock tower visible from the street. Walk the outer ring first before diving into the aisles.

Most stalls sell dry goods rather than tourist souvenirs: dried herbs, tea, noodles and household goods. Prices are usually lower than at Ben Thanh, though wholesale buyers get better deals. Ask the price, offer politely, and do not feel pressured.

Pair the visit with the Thien Hau Temple. A car or ride-hailing from the centre is the easiest way to get there. Be careful with bags and phones in the crowd.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.
