Why it matters
Why Thien Hau Temple is worth your time
The temple shows the Chinese community's central role in the city's history. Cholon was founded by Chinese settlers and today has the city's largest concentration of Chinese temples and clan halls.
Thien Hau, also known as Mazu, is a goddess of the sea, worshipped by southern Chinese communities around the region. Seeing her shrine here helps connect Ho Chi Minh City with the wider maritime trade routes that link southern China and Southeast Asia.

How to experience it
Reach the temple by car or ride-hailing from the centre, since Cholon is on the western side of the city. Walk through the entrance to the courtyard and look up at the ceramic figures on the roof, which show scenes from Chinese folklore.
Inside, the main altar is devoted to Thien Hau, who protects sailors and fishermen. Visitors and worshippers light incense, and some burn paper offerings. Move around the edge of the room to avoid disturbing people praying.
Combine the visit with Binh Tay Market, also in Cholon. A morning here, with lunch at a Chinese restaurant nearby, makes a good change from the central sights. Confirm vegetarian options before eating.
