The short answer
Saigon Notre-Dame Basilica: what visitors should know first
Go for the exterior and the square, which take 20 to 30 minutes. The basilica has been under renovation for years, so check whether the interior is open before planning a visit around it.
History and context
The story behind Saigon Notre-Dame Basilica
An earlier wooden church was started in 1863. The first stone of the present building was laid on 7 October 1877 and the basilica was blessed and completed on 11 April 1880. J. Bourard won the construction bid and supervised the work.
Materials came from France: bricks from Toulouse, roof tiles from Marseille, and 56 glass panels from the Lorin firm of Chartres.

Why it matters
Why Saigon Notre-Dame Basilica is worth your time
The basilica is a reminder of Saigon's French colonial period, and it remains an active Catholic place of worship. The bricks of its exterior walls were imported from Toulouse and the roof tiles from Marseille, which accounts for the unusual red colour.
For an Indian visitor, it is one of the clearest examples in the city of European colonial architecture transplanted to Asia, much as parts of Kolkata or Puducherry show their own colonial layers.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
The best approach is from the front of the square. The building's red brick, twin towers and white statue of the Virgin Mary stand out against the surrounding street and are visible from a distance. Walk around it to see how the French designers adapted a Romanesque and Gothic design.
If you want a closer look at the interior, ask your hotel or check recent visitor reports, because scaffolding and restoration work have affected access in recent years. Even when closed, the surrounding square is worth a slow walk, with benches and a view of the Central Post Office.
After your visit, cross the square to the post office, which makes a natural pairing and takes less than an hour together.
