History and context
The story behind Saigon Central Post Office
The current building was constructed between 1886 and 1891, on the site of an earlier building from 1860 to 1863. Alfred Foulhoux designed it, in an eclectic style with Gothic, Renaissance and French influences. It was renovated in 2014.
Vietnam Post owns it.

Why it matters
Why Saigon Central Post Office is worth your time
It is a useful stop for understanding what French rule left behind in the city. The building was designed by Alfred Foulhoux and is often wrongly credited to Gustave Eiffel; the earlier building on the site is the one associated with Eiffel.
Its hall is one of the more atmospheric indoor spaces in the city, and it remains in use. Dương Văn Ngộ worked there as a public letter writer from 1990 to 2021, described as the last in Vietnam, a reminder of how recently the service mattered.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Enter through the main arch and stop beneath the vaulted ceiling. Look for the two large painted maps on the walls: one shows telegraph lines across southern Vietnam and Cambodia, and the other shows Saigon and its surroundings in the early 1890s. A portrait of Ho Chi Minh hangs on the back wall.
The central hall is lined with counters and old wooden telephone booths. You can post a postcard here, which makes a small, low-cost souvenir. Outside, plaques on the walls honour scientists such as Morse, Faraday and Ohm.
The post office sits next to the Saigon Notre-Dame Basilica, so most visitors see both within an hour. A short walk leads to the Opera House and Dong Khoi Street.
