Why it matters

Why Ho Chi Minh City Opera House is worth your time

The theatre is a symbol of French colonial Saigon. It was built for the French community, and its facade is a French Third Republic design.

The building is now a municipal theatre and still hosts performances, so it is a living part of the city rather than just a monument. The theatre is worth knowing about because it anchors the old French centre: the surrounding square, the grand hotels and Dong Khoi Street all developed around it. Even if you never buy a ticket, the exterior tells you how the colonial city was laid out, and why the area still feels different from the rest of Ho Chi Minh City.

How to experience it

Stand on the square for a few minutes to appreciate the facade, which was modelled on the Petit Palais in Paris. The building sits at the end of Dong Khoi Street and is within walking distance of the cathedral and post office.

If a performance is scheduled, a ticket is the only practical way to see the interior. The programme includes music and theatre, but the quality and the language vary, so check what you are buying. Dress neatly and arrive early.

The Opera House station on Metro Line 1 serves the area, which makes the building easy to reach. Hotels such as the Park Hyatt and the Caravelle stand on the same square.
