Ho Chi Minh City neighbourhoods compared
- 01
Central District 1 (near Ben Thanh Market and the Opera House)
Best for: First-time visitors who want to walk to the cathedral, post office and market
Good to know: The most convenient base, with the Metro Line 1 station at Ben Thanh and many restaurants. It is also the busiest and noisiest part of the city, and pavements are uneven. Ask for a room away from the main road.
- 02
Pham Ngu Lao and Bui Vien area
Best for: Budget travellers and those who want cheap guesthouses and tour offices
Good to know: This is the traditional backpacker district, close to Ben Thanh and full of tour agencies and bus offices. It is lively late into the night, so light sleepers and older travellers should pick a hotel set back from Bui Vien Street.
- 03
Around Vo Van Tan and Nam Ky Khoi Nghia
Best for: Quieter stays close to the War Remnants Museum and Reunification Palace
Good to know: Tree-lined streets and a calmer feel than the main tourist strip. Fewer restaurants are directly on the street, but it is still within a short ride of the central sights.
- 04
Cholon (Chinatown)
Best for: Travellers who want Chinese temples and markets on the doorstep
Good to know: Fewer international hotels and a longer ride to central District 1, but more local atmosphere. Better as a day visit than a base for a first trip.

Before you book
What to check when booking for older travellers
- Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
- Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
- Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
- Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
- Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.
