Hogenakkal is a river outing more than a town. The Kaveri squeezes through a rocky gorge on the Tamil Nadu and Karnataka border, breaking into narrow channels and short drops rather than one tall fall. The name comes from Kannada words for smoke and rock, a reference to the spray that hangs over the stones when the river runs strong.
The usual visit is a day trip from Bengaluru or Dharmapuri. You see the falls from the decks and hanging bridge, take a coracle ride if the river is open, bathe in the railed areas, perhaps try a traditional oil massage, and eat fried fish at the riverside. The crocodile rehabilitation centre and its medicinal garden give a shaded break.
The river decides everything. After heavy rain in Karnataka the district administration can suspend bathing and boating, as it did for four days in August 2026, so keep dates flexible and check before you leave. For older travellers, the decks, bridge and bank are manageable with care, but the ground is wet, uneven and crowded on weekends.
Theerthamalai's hill temple in Harur taluk and the Mettur Dam downstream are possible add-ons, each a separate drive.
